There’s exciting news for tech enthusiasts in the West Midlands! Brace yourselves for a game-changing investment of £1 million set to fuel our local tech scene. From AI to green tech and digital skills, this funding is primed to ignite innovation and propel our region into the global tech spotlight. In this blog, we’ll cover this investment, and what you can expect that money to be put to use for in the future.

Where £1 million will get you in the West Midlands

So, where’s all this cash flowing? Well, it’s divvied up across five projects, each geared towards tech growth.

This includes a brand-new physical hub at the iCentrum building on the Innovation Birmingham Campus, and an online tech platform to further educate talent.

RBC Brewin Dolphin is throwing £200,000 into the mix to ramp up investor engagement. Meanwhile, Plug and Play is getting green with £200,000 dedicated to a juicy green tech innovation challenge. AND Digital steps in with £160,000 to fuel an AI Centre of Excellence. Plus, there’s £140,000 earmarked for a Digital Skills Consortium and a hefty £300,000 pumped into the Tech Connect project, bridging the gap between our local tech heroes and wider businesses.

This funding bonanza was unveiled at the epic third annual West Midlands Tech Review bash, hosted by our pals over at TechWM. With the backing of UK Tech Week, it was a real celebration of all things tech in our neck of the woods.

Does this sound familiar to you?

If this investment sounds a bit familiar to you, that’s because it probably is! This project was announced all the way in October 2023.

Talking about progress since that date, A digital skills consortium project was launched with £140,000 to shape skills training and help tech businesses gain more talented employees.

What else?

Yiannis Maos, CEO of TechWM, is supportive in this investment, saying, “This landmark £1 million investment in the region’s tech sector is going to move the dial for businesses in the ecosystem and beyond.” High fives all around!

And that’s not all, folks. TechWM dropped another bombshell by announcing a partnership with industry bigwig techUK.

Our local tech scene has been on a steady rise, becoming one of the best-funded regional ecosystems last year. Simon Walsh, CEO of OneAdvanced, sums it up, “The West Midlands is home to many of the UK’s fastest-growing tech businesses. We’re looking forward to helping shape and grow this unique and dynamic ecosystem powering, not only the West Midlands economy but also significantly contributing to our national economy.”
