In the UK, we are continuously working as a nation to ensure innovative developments throughout Cyber Security, IT and much more.

In this blog, we will outline some of these developments that have caught our eye, specifically within Derby.

To start with, we’ll tell you about a new governmental-funded project that already has cost £13 million in investments.

The Derby IT and IoT project

The University of Derby and the Derby College Group will work together on the new Institute of Technology (IoT).

This will be a great starting point in creating the highly advanced workforces needed in the future to “lead the digital revolution” – otherwise known as Industry 4.0.

Furthermore, IoT will focus on “levelling up” critical engineering, manufacturing and digital skills, due to the advanced skills required to work in an “AI and a data-driven economy”.

Based in the heart of the East Midlands, the IoT will specialise in many programmes, the one that is most relevant to this blog however, is their Information and Communication Technology courses.

Now we know a bit more about the plans of IoT and The University of Derby, we’ll explain the potential benefits that Derby could gain from this movement, along with the whole UK itself.

The potential benefits of this project?

First off, let’s talk about the economic impacts of a project such as this.

Starting from an official announcement, Professor Kathryn Mitchell DL, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Derby, stated that the IoT’s work with the University will be successful “Through our strong industry links, business experience and experience offering placements and apprenticeships in the engineering and technology sector.”

This suggests that the University will be implementing apprentice roles throughout their future Derby IT Programmes.

At first, the immediate economic benefit of this future possibility would be from young students being able to go to Derby and earn money for their IT training.

Although, the larger-scale benefit of this future project is the amount of high-skilled employees the UK’s IT industry will receive, depending on how successful the project is.

Secondly, another note-worthy benefit of this project from an environmental view is its “green” approach. Essentially, graduates from the University of Derby’s IT courses will be part of a net zero-carbon workforce. As the name implies, this strategy is aimed to help cut the carbon emissions of businesses.

This directly helps to achieve the grand target of net zero business greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 in the UK.

Not only is this quite a wholesome ambition for the community and University at Derby, but it also sets a great example for other organisations in the UK to follow suit.

Lastly, a more “social” benefit, is the increase in Cyber and IT awareness that government-funded projects like this cause. Not only does it show Derby’s willingness to advance their IT knowledge and Cyber awareness, but it also passes it down to the younger generations (in this case, students).

As we are an IT Support Service Provider ourselves, we can certainly appreciate a little more of this message being spread to the world, to aid more individuals and businesses.

Our Conclusion

Judging from the information we have learnt ourselves, in this blog, we can conclude that the future IoT collaboration with The University of Derby has quite exciting possibilities.

Additionally, it enables us to see the clear progress Derby as a whole is making in advancing its IT knowledge. For instance, on the 23rd of March, 2023, a large international Cloud software company set up their new HQ in Derby, this opened up plenty of new job openings, generating local wealth.

Additionally, we can’t rule out our very own Derby IT support services, with our recently established Solutions 4 IT branch location based right on Victoria Street!

Not only are these collections of recent IT developments generating a lot of interest in the future for employers, employees and students alike, but they also will further enhance Derby’s “image” as a new contender in the UK IT Industry.
